Renovating the Attic

Up at the top of the house sits the attic, a space forgotten about and barely used. A space we were surprised was so large.

We knew we wanted to do something with the space but could not decide on what the space should be.

We began to plan the renovation and determined what we were going to use the space for. I had dreams of it becoming my master suite but we decided it would be more practica to create two separate rooms, a large open living space and a bathroom to create more living space.

The angles of the walls and ceiling in the attic were a challenge to deal with but we had the intention of keeping the feeling of the attic intact. We knew we wanted to to work with the extreme angles of the attic and not remove the character of them. Rob’s never ending attention to detail ensured that the angles of the attic were put on display and we didn’t lose the look of the original space.

We try to approach our home renovations with the intention to celebrate the house and its original features. The wood planked floor of the attic was original from when the house was first built and we hoped we could reorganize the planks in order to use them for the main floor. Luckily it worked out and after they had been refinished we ended up with floors that were beyond our dreams.

We still hope to make the attic our master suite so when we did the bathroom we kept this in mind. We wanted to create a bathroom of our dreams and this included the claw foot tub we had craned into the attic the year before. We decided to tile the whole room in hopes of limiting future water damage, we found some beautiful tile for the floor that was sympathetic to history of the house.

Finding a vanity for the bathroom we both liked and fit the space was difficult, more difficult then we expected. We had to think outside of the box and we ended up buying an old wash stand at a second hand store and converted it to fit our needs.. We were very happy with the result.

The attic is one of the loveliest spaces Rob has ever renovated for us.
